Expand/Collapse Research Area : 3D Information Visualization ‎(5)
ThumbnailPhoto Mountain
Adaptation of the dataMountain metaphor to digital photo management.

Polyarchy Presentation
3D Animated Visualization for letting users pivot between intersecting hiearchies such as different aspects of a coporate database (location, reporting structure, business units, cost center, etc).

ThumbnailTask Gallery
A running 3D research prototype user interface that expands the desktop into an entire office with an unlimited number of desktops. The screen becomes a long gallery with paintings on the walls that represent different tasks, and the user moves quickly and easily from one to another with a simple series of mouse and keyboard commands.

ThumbnailData Mountain
A new technique for document management that allows users to place documents at arbitrary positions on an inclined plane in a 3D desktop virtual environment using a simple 2D inter-action technique.

ThumbnailTravel Planner
Gives an overview of an entire trip. Relate geographical, time, content, and theme information. Allows tentativeness/uncertainty in the planning process. Lets the user compare alternative trip configurations.

ThumbnailMinority Report Ideas
Interface concepts for pre-production including outdoor holographic kiosks, virtual information displays, and systems diagrams.

Expand/Collapse Research Area : Large Display User Experience ‎(4)
ThumbnailScalable Fabric Paper
Scalable Fabric couples window management with a flexible visual representation to provide a focus-plus-context solution to desktop complexity. Users interact with windows in a central focus region of the display in a normal manner, but when a user moves a window into the periphery, it shrinks in size, getting smaller as it nears the edge of the display.

ThumbnailGroupbar Paper
GroupBar, a task management system for dealing with the profusion of windows on the PC desktop. Designed to offer the same basic form and function as the existing Microsoft Windows™ TaskBar, GroupBar additionally allows users to group windows into higher-level tasks and enables task switching with a single mouse click

ThumbnailDrag-and-Pop Demo
Interaction technique designed to accelerate drag-and-drop on large screens. By animating potential targets and bringing them to the dragged object, drag_and_pop reduces the user effort required for dragging an object across the screen to a desired target. To preserve users’ spatial memory, targets are not moved away from their original location, but are instead stretched using a rubber band-like visualization.
Grab the icon surrounded by outward facing arrows and start dragging it toward the other highlighted icon. To show the highlights again, press the"space bar." To try different conditions, click on the "Start" button.

ThumbnailHigh-Density Cursor Demo
Various cues to help a user find a moving cursor on a large display. Try different combinations of the techniques to see which is right for you. Some work while the mouse is moving, some work once you have stopped moving the mouse.

Expand/Collapse Research Area : Notification Services ‎(1)
ThumbnailThe Scope
A glanceable notification summarizer. This simple information visualization tool helps unify notifications and reduce distractions for the user, thus avoiding notification overload. The Scope allows users to remain aware of notifications from multiple sources of information, including e-mail, instant messaging, information alerts, and appointments. The design employs a circular radar-like screen divided into sectors that group different kinds of notifications. The more urgent a notification is, the more centrally it is placed.

Expand/Collapse Research Area : Small Display User Experience ‎(4)
ThumbnailZoneZoom Paper
ZoneZoom, segments a given view of an information space into nine sub-segments, each of which is mapped to a key on the number keypad of the smartphone. This segmentation can be hand-crafted by the information space author based on a priori knowledge of the dataset or dynamically created at run-time. ZoneZoom allows users to easily “glance” at nearby areas and then quickly return to their current view by discriminating between tapping a button and pressing-and-holding a button.

ThumbnailSmartPhlow
SmartPhlow accesses information from the Washington State Dept. of Transportation. The application downloads a relatively small file, usually on the order of 200 bytes, and expands it to populate a Seattle area traffic map. ASI SmartPhlow stems from ongoing ASI research on software for notifications, interaction, and visualization. The SmartPhlow application also is a testbed for our research on interaction and display on small devices.

ThumbnailZoneZoom Prototype
A fisheye (magnified region) is created under the cursor. If you move slowly, the fisheye is fairly large. As you move the cursor more quickly, the fisheye reduces in size. From the "options" panel you can easily change which type of content (map, calendar, photo, etc) is shown.

Expand/Collapse Research Area : Stuff I've Seen / Phlat / Filtered Views ‎(3)
ThumbnailStuff I've Seen Paper
SIS provides a unified index of information that a person has seen, whether it was seen as email, web page, document, appointment, etc. Second, because the information has been seen before, rich contextual cues can be used in the search interface.

ThumbnailPhlat
Phlat is the next step after SIS. Phlat is an exploration into how a user can easily filter and tag large amounts of data.

ThumbnailStuff I've Seen
A working version of Filtered Views has been incorporated into Stuff I've Seen (SIS). Stuff I've Seen (SIS) is a tool for helping people easily find web pages, files, and e-mail messages that they've viewed in the past. From this web page, you can easily install SIS.
